Project Description

The countryside is in fact a highly regulated landscape in which we are instructed by landowners as to where we are permitted to go. The visual language of these directives varies from what seem like┬ápolite requests, to downright injunctions which allow no choice but to comply. It’s interesting how these restrictions, by way of both physical barriers and overt instructions, are incorporated into a picturesque landscape in which the ideology of ownership is camouflaged to conform to an idealised vision of “countryside”. The photographs imitate the visual style of generic┬ástock images as seen on calendars and postcards.
